A Beginning to knot with four/4 ends

(Two/2 strands needed)
1. Using one strand, make a flat knot around a pen or pencil. Make sure that both ends are equal in length. Push the other strand under the flat knot and make sure, again, that both ends are equal in length (picture 1).
2. Now start knotting, on the basis of one of the following techniques. The very first loops are always made with the two ends of the strand which you used to make a flat knot around a pen or pencil (picture 2).
3. Pull all the strands tight, but evenly in length (picture 3).
Thereafter, you remove the pen or pencil.

B Straight knotting technique with four/4 ends

(Two/2 strands needed)
4. Using one strand, make a flat knot around a pen or pencil. Make sure that both ends are equal in length. Push the other strand under the flat knot and make sure, again, that both ends are equal in length.
5. Starting position. Make loops with strands 1 and 2, cross-wise. Move strand 3 (cross-wise) over strand 1 and put it through the loop of strand 2. Repeat this in the opposite direction using strand 4. Pull all the strands tight, but evenly in length.
6. Repeat the steps of B5, but in the opposite direction.

C Round knotting technique with four/4 ends

(Two/2 strands needed)
4. Using one strand, make a flat knot around a pen or pencil. Make sure that both ends are equal in length. Push the other strand under the flat knot and make sure, again, that both ends are equal in length.
5. Starting position. Make diagonal loops in strands 3 and 4. Move strand 1 (diagonally) over strand 3, through loop 4. Repeat this in the opposite direction using strand 2.
6. Pull all the strands tight, but evenly in length. Repeat the steps of C5 and continue in the same direction.

D Straight knotting technique with six/6 ends

(Three/3 strands needed)
4. Refer to “Beginning to knot”, point 1.
Instead of one strand, you now push two strands under the flat knot.
5. Starting position. Make cross-wise loops in strands 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Move strand 5 (cross-wise) over strand 1, through loop 2, over strand 3, through loop 4. Repeat this in the opposite direction using strand 6. Pull all the strands tight, but evenly in length.
6. Repeat the steps of D5, but in the opposite direction.

E Round knotting technique with six/6 ends

(Three/3 strands needed)
4. Refer to “Beginning to knot”, point 1.
Instead of one strand, you now push two strands under the flat knot.
5. Starting position. Make diagonal loops in strands 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Move strand 5 (diagonally) over strand 4, through loop 3, over strand 2, through loop 1. Repeat this in the opposite direction using strand 6.
6. Pull all the strands tight, but evenly in length.

Finishing off the knotting

7. A little dot of plastic glue is applied to the last but one knot.
Then comes the very last knot.  Allow the glue to dry.
Finally, the strands are neatly cut off short.
